I learned a new word and it’s changing my entire perspective.
Maitri: Unconditional friendliness to oneself.
I took an amazing yoga class near my new office last night and this word was the meditation of the practice. It was really eye-opening. Each time the instructor reminded us to be friendly toward ourselves, I was twisted into an ugly position struggling to do it right. And as she reminded me, I thought, “Wow, I’m beating myself up RIGHT NOW.” And so I changed that. And I was friendly to myself. It’s kind of an odd feeling actually.
I have a lot more research to do on this beautiful word, but here’s a very short, and very calming explanation.
